Color is perhaps the most important element in floral design. Color is certainly the dominate element seen by the average viewer, and is frequently the only element recognized.   Color excites, inspires, emphasizes and communicates. The selection of color can be responsible for a design looking marvelous, or hopelessly dull.

The traditional color wheel shows the color spectrum of the rainbow curved into a circle.  The color wheel is widely used to illustrate the relationships among colors.

When you combine various hues, shades, tints and tones in pleasing ways, you create "color harmonies".  There are six classic color harmonies based on the hues of the color wheel; Monochromatic, Analogous, Complementary, Split Complement, Triadic and Polychromatic.
