On Thursday, June 2nd, 2005 the first Floral Design as Art exhibition was held at the Floral Design Institute Creative Center.  In the Pearl District of Portland, during the evening of the first Thursday of every month, all art galleries host special shows and exhibitions.  Other businesses such as furniture showrooms, architectural firms and restaurants join in as well.  David, who has led efforts to make the general public aware of floral design as an art form insisted that we too needed to host an exhibition.

He organized a plan for a juried show, drafted an outstanding jury and prepared the rules and requirements for the exhibition.  Local floral designers and artists were invited to submit sketches and descriptions of their proposed entries.   The jury then selected 15 designs for the exhibition.  The chosen designers created their designs and installed them in the Creative Center which had been turned into a large gallery for the First Thursday evening.  A champagne bar was set up and a French Muse band hired for the evening.  I have never seen David so nervous.  The exhibit was absolutely beautiful.  But would anyone show up?  Would the art crowd show up?  How would the exhibit be received?  As it turned out, our biggest problem of the evening was in being able handle the enormous crowd that turned out for the exhibition.  Over three hundred quests signed the guest register.  We can only guess at the total number who visited.  Davids’ nervousness turned to joy, helped a bit by the champagne I’m sure.   Yes, the art crowd did show up, and they loved the work presented.  The reviews were sensational, the evening a grand success.
