Bringing flowers into your home is an easy and beautiful first step to beating the winter blues.  I discovered many years ago the power that flowers can have on your mood.   When finally winter gets to me (usually during the second week of January) I declare winter to be over.  I buy bundles of tulips, daffodils, pussy willows, and blooming cherry branches.  Once my house is filled with spring flowers, spring has officially begun and my mood improves instantly.

As simple as this may sound, flowers are a genuine and positive therapy for the winter blues.  While we flower lovers have always believed in the power of flowers, we now have scientific evidence to support our beliefs.  Research conducted by Jeanette Haviland-Jones, PhD. At Rutgers University shows that flowers have an immediate impact on happiness.  Study participants upon receiving flowers expressed “true” smiles demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude.  Flowers were also shown to have a long-term effect on moods.  Study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious or agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.  Flowers bring a cheerful disposition to any environment. Bring them indoors and the effect is magnified, especially on a gray, drizzly day.
